Work Packages

WP 1: Wildlife Management in the Netherlands

In WP1, the consortium and external stakeholders will (1) combine academic and expert knowledge to conceptualize the Dutch Wildlife Management System using a leverage points perspective, (2) learn from alternative management systems and (3) map changes desired by each consortium member and stakeholder.

WP 2: Connecting Big Data to smart tools for innovative wildlife management

In WP2, we (1) develop a data management platform where consortium members can access and process the incoming BigData resulting from the animal sensors and human activity trackers, and (2) develop two mobile applications (WildGids and WildRadar) that connect to the data management platform and use the incoming data to monitor and influence human-wildlife behavioral interactions.

WP 3: Ethics and philosophy of human-wildlife interactions

In WP3, we will (1) examine ethical and philosophical views underneath different models of human-wildlife coexistence, (2) develop ethical and conceptual non-dualist framework that can help navigate between need to control wildlife to protect vital human interests, and the willingness to recognize the intrinsic value of wildlife and the desire to experience wildlife, in order to support ethical dialogue on human-wildlife relations, and (3) create a non-dualist, non-anthropocentric narrative for a new approach to wildlife management.

WP 4: Collaborative and adaptive governance of human-wildlife behavior

In WP4, we (1) examine the existing governance system to identify governance challenges, institutional opportunities and barriers for collaborative and adaptive approaches to manage human-wildlife behavior and (2) co-create novel governance arrangements for the collaborative and adaptive management of human wildlife behavior and to evaluate their performance to foster learning and aid a potential up-scaling.

WP 5: Understanding and shaping human-wildlife behavioral interactions through smart technologies

In WP5, we will (1) implement novel technologies, developed under WP2, to improve our understanding of the behavioral interactions between different human stakeholders and different wildlife species, (2) assess how environmental drivers, such as weather and landscape variables, influence these dynamic behavioral interactions, and (3) test how these novel technologies can function as non-lethal tools to reduce human-wildlife conflicts by changing the behavior of humans and wildlife.

WP 6: Human dimensions of human-wildlife interactions

In WP6, we (1) examine understand individual human-wildlife relations and the drivers of human (in)tolerance towards wildlife in order to identify opportunities and challenges for managing human-wildlife interactions, (2) identify conditions for productive dialogues and negotiation processes in multi-stakeholder conversations on human-wildlife relations and wildlife management, and (3) co-create and test context-specific conflict mitigation approaches and provide a handbook with guidelines for adaptive management of human-wildlife interactions.

WP 7: Transformation of Dutch Wildlife Management

In WP7, we will (1) co-create transformation pathways to shift to adaptive management of human-wildlife behavior in the Netherlands, (2) develop a multi-stakeholder serious game to facilitate stakeholder collaboration on the management of human-wildlife behavior, and (3) provide recommendations to upscale the lessons learnt in WildlifeNL through synthesizing the findings of WP3-6, identifying key leverage points for adaptive management of human-wildlife behavior and evaluating the project outcomes.

WP 8: Knowledge Utilization

In WP8, we (1) organize the co-creation workshops and reflection series, (2) communicate results to practitioners, policy makers, stakeholder groups, and the general public, (3) support the roll-out of the citizen science project, WildRadar, WildGids and the serious game, and (4) develop the inter-university lifelong learning course.
